No, not British. You must be Australian, I believe. All the geography you describe is unknown to my ignorance...so you drive on the wrong side of the road too? (I have a TERRIBLE sense of humor: no offense meant nor sugested!!!)

Maybe the rotation of the earth, down there below the ecuatorial belt, provoques this things: like water on the sink rotates the other way than above Ecuator...or it is just another expression of freedom !

Very good maintenace description, and I am an official certified VW mechanic (left the VW mexWerke in 1969, free-lance since then) I enjoy your blog A LOT !!!

Shirl is in EXCELENT hands, and what a beautifull country you trek...thanks for sharing, photos and all.

Are you British? the sliding door seems on the wrong side (joking, no wrong side! & I love vintage british automobiles) maybe the photo is reversed. Some combis were equiped with two sliding doors (special order only, on those days)

how come you have an 1800 cc? My "Perica" (spanish for "parrot": two tone green paint job) has that engine, and it is a 1,700 cc (1.7 lt as they say now) That engine was used on the Porsche 914, although it is a VW engine, the called that car the VW-Porsche in those days...but had two carbs with two throats each. It is a little detuned from the VW factory for not over heating under the VW bus load, on long road streches.

Then, there were the after-market bigger bores...up to 2.1 lt. but not as resistant,.

My "Perica, has a top speed of...100 ml/h! Her speedo dial top (at the botom) mark, is 90...so the needle points to the blue HighBeam idiot light, past the 90 mark...at México city altitude (7,500 ft, almost 2,500 meters) on the highway from the Mex. city to Pachuca city (going north) maybe with some tailwind...I have the long diferential, that automatic came from the type 4. Going up from Cuernavaca to México city, on the highway, maximum 60 ml/h (with tailwind too! acceleration is not like a Porsche)...with my labrador Iván & all tools. (1/3 of full load)

those two metal spacers, are for caliper piston position. They have certain indents to avoid the piston turning in it's cilinder The piston does not push the pad all around, has an indent with acertain angle position, has to do with rotating disk forward direccion. No big problem, but it can pull to one side if not positioned simetricly on both pads, both calipers. It also guives the diference betwen little braking foot presure, or a hard brake feel...but it stops OK. ¿How could I upload some sketch? then it is self explaining...

it seems the litle bit of lithium grease needed on the distributor cam, was not put there. Like they worked dry! only the size of a match head: don't overlub...any time somebody else puts points in my customers vehicles, I have to assist them on the road: same problem since the sixties! NO GREASE on the dist. cam. Usually they just close toguether and no spark, after e few kilometers: the broken plastic seems like forcing them with the screwdriver...
